About the LegalTech Lab

Established to promote cooperation at the intersection of law, technology and business, and to advance LegalTech as a field that cannot be effectively studied or practised within a single faculty

In brief

The LegalTech Lab is an interdisciplinary research and educational initiative working at the intersection of law, technology and business.

The Lab was established by the LegalTech platform Document.ge and operates as an educational/research initiative of Document.ge, in cooperation with Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University (SabaUni), which serves as its academic host.

The Lab was launched within the framework of SabaUni’s participation in the University Capacity Building Program (UCBP), funded by the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi and implemented by the American Councils for International Education.

The Lab is headed by Shalva Jokharidze, founder of Document.ge and head of the Law and Technology Initiative at Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University.

The LegalTech Lab is not an independent higher education institution and does not award state-accredited degrees. Academic credit, where applicable, is administered by participating accredited universities and faculties.

Its activities include interdisciplinary education, project-based learning, applied research, practical experimentation/prototyping and real-world problem solving. The Lab may also develop and provide practical LegalTech solutions and services, including in cooperation with external organisations and practitioners.

Mission

LegalTech is not only a technology discipline. Applying technology in legal and administrative environments requires an understanding of law, legal procedures, professional ethics, organisational processes, data and business needs. The Lab brings these perspectives together, allowing participants from different academic and professional backgrounds to work on the same problems and develop practical solutions.

The Lab aims to create an interdisciplinary, research-driven and practical environment where legal, technological and business knowledge come together to study, design and implement solutions for the digital transformation of legal services, justice systems and organisational processes.

A key part of the Lab’s work is connecting traditional legal thinking with technology and computational systems, helping lawyers, researchers, technologists and business professionals work together more effectively.

Objectives

  • Interdisciplinary education – Bring together students and researchers from law, computer science, IT and business through joint courses, seminars, student projects and cross-faculty initiatives. The Lab also develops LegalTech components for clinical legal education and university legal clinics.
  • Inter-university cooperation – Provide a platform for cooperation between universities and faculties through joint teaching, student teams, research activities, seminars and other LegalTech initiatives.
  • Academia, practice and prototyping – Connect academic learning with real organisational, administrative and corporate processes through practical projects, experimentation and development of LegalTech prototypes, decision trees, compliance tools and automated workflows.
  • Practical skills – Develop practical LegalTech skills among lawyers, researchers and technical specialists, including technology literacy for legal professionals and legal literacy for technical specialists.
  • Applied research – Support research in areas such as legal engineering, legal operations, AI in legal practice and computational law.
  • Responsible innovation – Promote responsible use of technology, including privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, algorithmic transparency and professional ethics.
  • Knowledge sharing – Publish research, educational materials, practical guides, workflow documentation and case studies.
  • Real-world problem solving – Work with universities, practitioners, organisations and other partners to identify and address practical challenges through legal and technological solutions.
